Additionally, 30% of armed conflict incidents occurred in cities and towns with archaeological 

sites that also had reports of looting incidents. Table 3 shows the cities that experienced both armed 

conflict incidents and antiquities looting, as well as the number of armed conflict incidents each 

reported. It is not possible to say for certain that the conflict incidents occurred within the 

archaeological sites; however, the immediate vicinity of archaeological sites to armed conflict 

incidents in the sample may make them more likely to be a target for looters, especially those who 

are organizers or actors in the conflict.
