Hypothesis 1 (positive relationship). Antiquities looting and armed conflict are positively related.
•
Hypothesis 2 (strategic looting). An increase in antiquities looting incidents will precede an
increase in armed conflict incidents.
•
Hypothesis 3 (opportunistic looting). An increase in armed conflict incidents will precede an
increase in antiquities looting incidents.
Overall, the hypotheses are partially supported.
The findings show strong support for
the hypothesis that a positive relationship exists between armed conflict and antiquities looting
(Hypothesis 1) and moderate support for the hypothesis that a spike in antiquities looting will lead to
an increase in armed conflict (strategic looting—Hypothesis 2). The findings show very little support
for the third hypothesis that an increase in armed conflict will lead to an increase in antiquities looting
(opportunistic looting). Table
1
provides the summary of results by hypothesis. Descriptive statistics
and a discussion of the results of each hypothesis are given below.
