 Invertebrate Digestive Systems 
Animals have developed a variety of digestive systems to help them digest the various foods 
they eat. The simplest example is that of a 
gastrovascular cavity
and is found in organisms with only 
one opening for digestion. Platyhelminthes (flatworms), Ctenophora (comb jellies), and Cnidaria 
(coral, jelly fish, and sea anemones) use this type of digestion. As seen in Figure 141a, gastrovascular 
cavities are typically a blind tube or cavity with a single opening, the "mouth," which also functions 
as a "anus." The mouth is where ingested material enters and travels through a hollow, tubular cavity. 
Digestive enzymes are secreted by cells within the cavity, which break down the food. The cells lining 
the gastrovascular cavity take up the food particles. 
The 
alimentary canal
, shown in Figure 141b, is a more advanced system: it consists of one 
tube with a mouth at one end and an anus at the other. An animal with an alimentary canal is 
something like an earthworm. Following ingestion through the mouth, food travels through the 
esophagus and is stored in the crop before entering the gizzard to be churned and digested. The food 
enters the intestine from the gizzard, where nutrients are absorbed and waste is expelled as castings 
through the anus.
