Reading #1: Global climate change
 
All biomes are 
universally affected
by global conditions, such as climate, that ultimately shape 
each biome’s environment. In the last 60 years, a number of distinct changes have been observed by 
climate scientists and have become increasingly obvious. 
Global climate change
is the term used to 
describe altered global weather patterns, especially a worldwide increase in temperature and resulting 
changes in the climate, due largely to rising levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide. 
Climate and Weather 
A typical fallacy about global climate change is the idea that a particular weather occurrence 
in a certain area (for instance, a very cool week in June in central Indiana) serves as proof of the 
phenomenon. A cold week in June, on the other hand, is a weather-related event, not a climate-related 
one. These misconceptions often arise because of confusion over the terms 
climate
and 
weather

Climate
refers to the long-term, 
predictable atmospheric conditions
of a specific area. A 
biome's climate is defined by its regular seasonal temperature and rainfall ranges. Climate does not 
consider the amount of rain that fell on a specific day in a biome or the day's colder-than-average 
temperatures. In contrast, 
weather
refers to the conditions of the atmosphere during a short period of 
time. Weather forecasts are usually made for 48-hour cycles. Although they are available, long-range 
weather forecasts can be unreliable.

Imagine that you are organizing an outdoor gathering in northern Wisconsin in order to better 
understand the distinction between climate and weather. Because you are aware that any given 
Saturday in the months of May to August would be a better choice for an outdoor event in Wisconsin 
than any given Saturday in January, you would consider the weather when planning the event in the 
summer rather than the winter. The event should not, however, be scheduled for a specific day 
because it is difficult to predict the weather on any given day. Climate can be thought of as "average" 
weather that occurs over a long period of time.
