Meaning: To emphasize that when you are
in a large group with other
people, you are less likely to be harmed.
Dialogue example:
Speaker A: We are lost in the woods at night. What should we do?
Speaker B: We must stick together. There's safety in numbers.
The worse for wear
Meaning: Exhausted; tired;
in poor condition; beaten up from use.
Example: He was slightly the worse for wear after a grueling workout; Your
jacket seems to be the worse for wear - I'll buy you a new one.
Throw a spanner in the works
Meaning: To prevent things from going as planned (mainly
by causing
problems or difficulties).
Example: I was ready to publish my novel when my little sister threw a
spanner in the works by deleting the book from my computer.
Throw cold water on something
Meaning: To destroy someone's
enthusiasm for something; be extremely
pessimistic about someone's plans or ideas.
Example: You're always throwing cold water on my ideas!
Tie up loose ends
Meaning: To deal with little issues/problems
left unresolved from
something; to complete minor matters that are the result of a previous
action.
Example: It was almost a perfect heist. With all the witnesses under control,
all that remained was to tie up loose ends.
