Google was officially launched in 1998 by Larry Page and Sergey Brin to market Google Search, which has become the most used web-based search engine. Larry Page and Sergey Brin, students at Stanford University in California, developed a search algorithm at first known as "BackRub" in 1996, with the help of Scott Hassan and Alan Steremberg. The search engine soon proved successful and the expanding company moved several times, finally settling at Mountain View in 2003. This marked a phase of rapid growth, with the company making its initial public offering in 2004 and quickly becoming one of the world's largest media companies. The company launched Google News in 2002, Gmail in 2004, Google Maps in 2005, Google Chrome in 2008, and the social network known as Google+ in 2011 (which was shut down in April 2019), in addition to many other products. In 2015, Google became the main subsidiary of the holding company Alphabet Inc.
The search engine went through many updates in attempts to eradicate search engine optimization abuse, provide dynamic updating of results, and make the indexing system rapid and flexible. Search results started to be personalized in 2005, and later Google Suggest autocompletion was introduced. From 2007, Universal Search provided all types of content, not just text content, in search results.
Google has engaged in partnerships with NASA, AOL, Sun Microsystems, News Corporation, Sky UK, and others. The company set up a charitable offshoot, Google.org, in 2005.
The name Google is a misspelling of Googol, the number 1 followed by 100 zeros, which was picked to signify that the search engine was intended to provide large quantities of information.
One of the potential partners they called was a friend of there's (who is the founder of yahoo) David Filo. Filo agreed that Page and Brin had technology that was very solid. He advised Page and Brin to develop there service themselves by starting a search engine company. No other potential partners were interested in google. A portal CEO told Page and Brin "as long as were 80 percent as good as our competitors, that's good enough. Our users don't really core about search.
Although Page and Brin were unable to interest the major portal players, they decided to go at it alone. All they needed was more money out of the dorm, and to clear up unpaid credit cards they used up by buying a terabyte of memory. One day Page and Brin came across Andy Bechtolsheim. Bechtolsheim is one of the founders of sun Microsystems. He took one look at the demo of google (Page and Brin had created) and he knew it had a lot of potential. At the time Bechtolsheim was in a rush, so since he liked what he saw he wrote Page and Brin a check for one thousand dollars. Unfortunately since there was no legal company know as "google inc." they couldn't deposit the check. They held on to it while they scrambled to set up a corporation. While looking for funding there total investment was almost one million dollars. On September 7, 1998, google inc. opened google inc. first home. It was a space attached to a friends garage. They hired there first employee there. Craig Silverstein was the first employee hired and was named googles director of technology. Google.com (still in beta) was growing and was answering 10,000 search queries each day. The media began to notice the new search engine and by December of 1998 PC magazine named google one of its top 100 web sites and search engines. The more the media noticed google the more it moved up in the world. By feburary of 1999 google had grown substantially larger and had to move from its small home Menlo Park. Google inc. moved to an office on university avenue in Palo Alto. At this point google inc. had eight employees, and the service was answering more than five hundred...

Google played a crucial role in shaping the modern internet and still is playing its role. Today, the way we live our lives, the way we search or look for things is mostly because of Google. It directly or indirectly impacts millions of people and it continues to impact many more lives. There’s no doubt it’s the ‘Modern Day Oxygen’. It began in the year 1996, when two of the brightest mind at Stanford University in California, Larry Page and Sergey Brin developed a search algorithm at first known as ‘BackRub’ with the help of two friends Scott Hassan and Alan Steremberg. The word Google has no full form but is generated from the word ‘googol’ which means a huge number. The word Google was misspelled and later decided to use it as the company’s name. Google.com was registered in the year 1997 and later incorporated in 1998. The company initially started in the garage of a friend named Susan Wojcicki in Menlo Park, California.
