I enjoy constantly reading articles that discuss topics related to assessing the speaking skills of young learners. But among the articles on this topic, the article entitled "TEACHER' ASSESSMENT OF YOUNG LANGUAGE LEARNERS' SPEAKING SKILL" by Nur Qonita Aulia from Indonesia attracted my attention and I really liked this article. In this article, Nur Qonita Aulia has tried to cover this topic in detail and I think she has done a great job. In the article, Nur Qonita Aulia also mentions that teaching foreign languages to children in Indonesia starts as early as kindergarten. At the initiative of President I. A. Karimov, decisions were made to start teaching foreign languages to children from kindergarten.
This article contains the opinions and opinions of many people who have done research and studies on this topic. In the article, the author cited the opinions of researchers such as Nunan, Penny, Pinter, Suyanto, Brumfit, Hallowell, Innayah, Kosar and Bedir, Irawati. For example, in the article, the author divides young students into three age groups: under three years old, five to seven years old, and eleven to twelve years old. He gave his opinions and comments about dividing students into two age groups: from six to eight years old and from nine to twelve years old.
As everyone knows, unlike adults, young students are unique and special. The article mentions Papp's opinion that we need to use face-to-face forms of communication to evaluate children's speaking ability, and that we can use traditional paper and pencil tests to evaluate other skills, namely writing, reading, and listening skills. For example, the recommendations of Penny, Carpenter, Fujii, Kataoka, etc. are given as examples.
In the article, not only thoughts and opinions, but also methods aimed at the development of children's speaking skills by these researchers are given as examples. For example, Penny recommends using the news-telling method to develop children's speaking skills.
Of course, when evaluating students' speech, it is better for the teacher to give a clear assessment of the learning outcomes. In this way, students can maximize their efforts to achieve more success. Teachers need to know their own mistakes so that students can learn from them.
I really enjoyed each of the ideas and thoughts in this article, as well as the recommended methods for evaluating speaking skills. I will try to use these methods in different ways in my future work, depending on the age level of the children.
