I really think that children listen to their parents a lot in China. You know, people are quite
conservative, and children are educated to obey their parents and teachers. Children don't want to
disappoint or upset their folks (= parents). Even if they might disagree, they will eventually follow
their parents' advice. That's the way it works here. When I was at university, quite a few ofmy
classmates told me they were studying computer engineering (or something else) because their
parents had chosen this major for them.
3. Do you think that parents generally know what is best for their children?
Yes, I think so, because they mean well for their children. However, we know that parents can be
stubborn and they might try to force their children to do things they don't like. Parents always
expect a lot from their kids, especially in China. Because of the one-child policy, you know,
parents pay a great deal of attention to their children's education. But generally speaking, I would
trust a parent's judgment, because they have more life experience, and they have a good idea of
what is good for a kid's development.
