Teacher
training for CLIL
In some European countries teacher training is already available for
teachers who want to become involved in CLIL. In other countries,
however, specialised teacher-training courses for CLIL need to be
developed. Teacher training can be organised
in both pre- and in-service
courses or can take the form of a joint course for foreign
language teachers
and content teachers. Course components on language awareness and
second language acquisition should be included together with classroom
observations and graded microteaching sessions. Finally, language teachers
should become content sensitive and aware of the typical features of the
special languages used in subject teaching.
Competences expected of teachers working with CLIL
Adapted from “Competences expected of newly qualified teachers”
developed by the Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education
(C.A.T.E.)
in the United Kingdom, 1992.
Teacher training for CLIL in pre- and in-service courses should focus on the
competences of teaching through a foreign language.
