August 2010

site Visit takes Place in Accra

A site visit to Accra, Ghana, was conducted by Dr. John kortbeek (ATLS International

Course Director) and Dr. Saud Al Turki (ATLS–Saudi Arabia Chair) July 13–14, 2010. Since

achieving independence in 1957, Ghana has become one of the most prosperous

and stable countries in sub-Saharan Africa and has a population of 24 million.

The sponsoring organization for ATLS promulgation is the Ghana College of Physicians

and Surgeons (GCPS), and the initiative is being led by professor David Ofori-Adjei, acting

rector of the GCPS. Initial officials attending the ATLS site visit meetings and tour included:

David Ofori-Adjei, acting rector, GCPS

kuame Agyire Tettey, manager, Surgical Skills Lab

Henry Baddoo, Department of Anesthesia, korle-Bu Teaching Hospital (kBTH)

S. B. Naaeder, Department of Surgery, kBTH

J. Clegg Lamptey, Department of Surgery, kBTH

N.A. Adu-Aryee, Department of Surgery, kBTH

Robert Ekow Quansel, Department of Surgery kBTH

E. k. Osei, Department of Surgery kBTH

Located at the College of Health Sciences, the host facility is the Medical and

Surgical Skills Institute of Ghana at the University of Ghana and korle-Bu Teaching

Hospital. The facility is a large, modern teaching and surgical skills facility, which

contains space capable of supporting four simultaneous surgical skills practical

stations using cadaveric or vivarium models. Modern anesthetic as well as open

and laparoscopic skills are currently taught here. ATOM

courses have already been

successfully introduced in Ghana. Multiple small group and lecture facilities, storage

areas, and an office with Internet access for course reporting are available.

During the visit, Dr. kortbeek and Dr. Al Turki stayed at the residential facility of the

Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons in Accra. It is approximately a 15-minute

drive from the simulation center. The facilities exceeded the requirements for

conducting ATLS courses. Oversight provided by the GCPS ensures that responsibility

and commitment are clearly in place. The tradition of teaching using a simulation

environment is already a strong component of the program of instruction in Accra.

The site visit team supports ATLS promulgation in Ghana

enthusiastically and without hesitation.
