persistence of vision media n. an early theory of how the projection of successive images (e.g. frames of a film or cartoon) could create the sense of continuous motion. It maintained that the retina of the eye retained each projected image for a fraction of a second before the next image followed in quick succession. Although the theory has survived in some account accounts of film, psychologists have long explained the sense of continuous motion in terms of the brain making sense of perceptual data rather than the retina retaining an after-image. => Thaumatrope (= ‘wonder-turner’) mmo

persona media n. usually a fictional identity assumed for the sake of mediated public performance. The use of a recurrent persona is a common feature of British television and radio comedy, especially when it involves camp or drag comic routines. Examples would be Mrs Merton, Lily Savage, Dame Edna, and Ali G. More fundamentally, in dramaturgical theories of social action all behavior in public requires the assumption of a persona fashioned for the occasion but distinct from the ‘real’ or inner self. mmo

personality media n. a person well-known by virtue of their frequent appearances on television or more generally in the media. Television personalities may exhibit particular kinds of excellence in a field such as cookery, sport or music but they typically project a certain kind of approachable, warm and friendly ordinariness. They may be extremely talented in a field but they also excel at ‘being themselves’ on television. ****
