The term originates from the French word mélodrame which derives from the Greek melos, music, and the French drama, from the Greek drān, to perform. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, music or song accompanied spoken recitation, such as in Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s Pygmalion, first staged in 1770. Hollywood melodrama is a sub-genre of film-making which often featured a central female protagonist struggling against the effects of alcoholism and domestic violence. mmo
