5: Spatial Data Infrastructure
 
 
Information is an asset that can be shared and traded. It has value; can be 
bought and sold; value can be added in various processing steps. This 
means that information becomes a commodity and, like all other 
commodities, needs to be transported and distributed. For this to be carried 
out effectively there is the need to setup an infrastructure. Geographical 
information utility (GIU) is an infrastructure set up for the efficient integration 
and distribution of geographic data/information to enhance its availability, 
accessibility and use. Despite the technological change, the free flow and 
use of the information is still in its infancy. Therefore the main objective of 
this course is to understand the structure and processes and its standards 
which are involved in data sharing. Subject includes the applications and  
architecture of Spatial Data Infrastructure
