Modern technologies made it possible for people to communicate easily in a way which is more convenient for them. There are different ways of communication today: older ones like post, telephone and fax and modern ones like email, SMS and social media sites. It has become much easier to write an email and send it to your friend or colleague and you are sure that it will reach its addressee in a few seconds even if the distance between you is huge.
It has also become very easy to meet new people and make friends at distance. With the help of such social media sites like Instagram, Facebook or their Russian analogues VK.com or Odnoklassniki you can either find people who you have lost contact with or make new friends. Forums and chats help people with similar interests to create groups and discuss things that interest them. Many of them meet in real life and communicate.
As for me, I consider myself a "digital native" and I am interested in new gadgets and the Internet. I usually spend my free time on social media sites too. I have profiles on Instagram and Facebook and post pictures and status updates. It's nice to get comments on them and also it is cool to hear from people who you haven't heard from for a long time. Furthermore, it is easy to drop a message to your friends or discuss something online. My parents are "digital immigrants", so I had to teach them to use the Internet and email. I am proud that I succeeded in it and now they have their own profiles on some social media sites and use email often.
I have got some pen friends too. One of them, Tom, lives in America in Texas. He is my peer and we usually drop each other emails. On the one hand, it is extremely interesting to know what life is like in America and learn about their habits and culture. On the other hand, I have a very good opportunity to practice my English. I ask Tom to correct mistakes in my letters and this really helps me in my studies.
My other pen friend's name is Angela, she is from Bonn, Germany. She speaks English well and she is fascinated by Russia and our traditions and way of life, so I tell her about my country and the way we live here. Angela is thinking of learning Russian as a second foreign language.
I think it is really important to have pen friends from different countries. This will help you practice English or another language that you learn and also it will give you an opportunity to learn something about the life of other countries and their culture.
Although I have many friends within the country but I have always wished to cultivate a friend in a foreign country. The other day I was going through a magazine and came across the addresses of many children from the world over who were desirous to make pen friends.
I looked for the name and the country that I liked. I wanted a pen friend in the United States of America as I found the culture of that country very different from ours. At last I found the address of Mary who lives in San Francisco. She is Fifteen-Year-old and is the daughter of two doctors. Her parents love her dearly as she is the only child
She wrote to me as soon as she received my first letter and I was very touched by her warmth and friendliness. Mary loves America a lot. She had never heard much about India and she always expressed her surprise when she realized how advanced India had become. Otherwise people have a very poor impression about our country-a backward and primitive country I try to give her an objective and unbiased view of my country and her people and she does the same.

The result of this honest sharing has been the growth of a greater understanding between the two of us. I realize that she is a sensitive and loving person. She is extremely lovely to. As she is the only child she writes to me about all her problems and I do the same. We give each other a lot of support although we live so far from each other.

Pen friends, apart from being our confidants, help to educate us and broaden our horizons.
I have a best friend. Her name is Anna. I met her in a summer camp last year. It turned out that we have a lot in common, things like our hobbies, our favourite kinds of music and many other. That’s why we became friends almost immediately.
Anna is a beautiful girl. She is tall and slim. My friend has dark long hair and beautiful blue eyes. I always admired Ann’s style of clothes. She dresses very prettily and stylishly.
I love my friend for her brilliant character. She is very kind and polite. She is a person, who is always ready to help if I need it. She always tries to be funny and can make me laugh when I feel very sad. But Anna has a bad trait, too. Sometimes she is very stubborn. It’s pretty hard to argue with her. But we try to strike a compromise. And it almost always helps. Anna is a very smart girl. She has the highest marks in the class. Therefore, if something goes wrong for me, I always ask for help from a friend. And she never refuses.
I spend a lot of time with Anna. We study at the same school. And we spend almost all free time together. On warm summer evenings we walk along the alleys talking on various topics. We usually watch films in the evenings and eat popcorn. Sometimes it takes all night. My friend has a big dog that I love to play with.
Now every summer we go to the sea with our families. And in the winter, when it is very cold, we go skiing and snowboarding.
Without my friend Anna, I could hardly have so much fun. And when she leaves somewhere, I feel sad and lonely. Therefore, I am very glad that I have such a wonderful friend who is always there and ready to support in difficult times. For all the years of our friendship, she has become like a sister for me. We tell each other everything, share secrets and problems. And I hope that our friendship will last forever.
My best friend`s name is Olya. We made friends when we were little kids and have been friends during all this time. I love her very much because she is responsible and never lets me down. She understands me very well and I can always confide in her and I rely on her in any situation. She is very intelligent, too, and we can spend hours discussing different problems.
She is athletic, as she goes in for karate. She likes swimming, too. Besides, she is fond of reading and really reads a lot. Sometimes, she writes, too, and I also write some stories and poems, so we can discuss our works too.
Olya is very sociable and has a lot of friends. Unlike her, I`m rather shy, but she never forgets about me in a company and always sees to it that I don`t feel lonely. We`ve made a lot of friends already thanks to Olya`s sociability.
We are lucky, because our parents are also friends, and very often our families spend together weekends and holidays. We go to the theatre or to the forest to have picnic. I`m so glad I have such friend as Olya and I hope we`ll never quarrel and we always be together.
have a lot of friends, but the best friend of mine is Irina. She has blue eyes, a round face, fair hair and a broad smile.
She is short and slim. I have known her for a long time, since our first school years. But we became true friends four years ago.
We have much in common: we like English and psychology, sport and dancing.
We are looking at this world in the same way and first estimate a person’s mind, their kindness. We don’t understand meanness and treachery. For many years we have been sitting at the same desk: Irina and me.
But it’s only recollections now. On a May morning the last bell rang for us for the last time and in the farewell waltz the last school ball was dancing.
Irina chose the proffession of psychologist and handed in the application for admittance to the institute. She finished school excellenty and she won’t have any problems with the admittance, I hope. We shall study at different institutes and, of course, we won’t see each other very often.
But at weekends I’ll come to her place.
Irina has wonderful parents. We have a good time together. I think that we shan’t stop going to the gym at school and we’ll often meet our school friends.
I also have a pen-friend.
Her name’s Vika. She lives in Moscow. Vika is a model. She has an oval face, green eyes, straight nose and full red lips. She is rather tall and slim. She has long, curly brown hair. We spend a lot of time together.
I love my friends and I think they are my true friends.
I know Anna for only two years, but I can already call her my best friend. We met at a music school where I study the violin. We immediately found a common language. Anna also likes going to the movies like me. Very often in the evenings after class, we go to the movies together.
Anne is 12 years old. She is much taller than me. Next, to her, I look like her younger sister. We often joke about it, and I am not offended at all. I really like that we are so different. Anna lives next to me, but she studies far from home. She learns French because she wants to become a translator. Very often, Anna tells me about France. She knows a lot about French cinema. Her favourite actress is Juliet Binoche.
We have never argued for two years. Sometimes we disagree, but it doesn’t prevent us from being friends. We respect each other. I often ask Anna for advice. She is smart and reasonable. Very often, my friend helps me deal with my problems, which after a while seem ridiculous.
I’m not a very sociable person. To my mind, it’s not obliged for people to have a lot of friends in order to be happy. It’s enough, as I think, to have one or two friends who are able to understand you and to support you in hard situations. So, there are few people whom I can call friends. We have much in common and we enjoy communicating with each other.
One of my friends is Natalie. She is eighteen. I can say that she is beautiful and smart girl. She left school 2 years ago and now she is a second year student of the University. Natalie wants to be a journalist. She studies well because she is greatly interested in her future profession. Natalie is a hardworking girl too. I admire this feature of her character because I don’t have it.
Natalie does not have much free time but if she has, she likes to spend it in a good company, consisting of her school friends. When we gather together we like to listen to music, both classical and modern one, to watch new films and discuss them. I enjoy talking to her a lot because she knows many interesting facts about famous people, history. Her favorite subject at school were history and literature. She is fond of reading. Books have become part and parcel of her life.
We trust each other so much that we have some personal secrets which are not revealed to the others. I can tell her about my troubles and I am sure that Natalie would help me and give me a piece of good advice.
Natalie is an intelligent person. She has a deep and genuine interest in people. I’m happy to have such a good friend as Natalie. I have a lot of friends. Most of them are classmates. My best friend called Andrey. He is fourteen. He lives with his parents not far from the school.
Andrey has a lot of hobbies: he likes to play the computer, to read detective stories, to collect butterflies. He likes animals, espesially cats. He has got a cat Lastik at home. Andrey has short, light hair and grey eyes. He is quite short and rather thin. He always manages to be cheerful, energetic, full of life and energy. He is helpful and honest. Andrey is very popular. Hе is a helpful person and every time he tries to do her best to help somebody when he has problems. Andrey is very attentive to his parents.
