Fig. 3. Eriophyes avaricus n. sp. – semischematic drawings
R
ELATION TO THE HOST
– the yellowish, ochre mites were found in the inside of petioles,
on the surface of a tumour in the cavity, close to the base of petiole.
T
YPE LOCALITY
– Budapest, district I, Várfok street, 134 m elev.; 47°30.377’N,
19°01.458’E.
T
YPE MATERIAL
– Holotype female circled with black ink among 6 females, 1 male
and 1 nymph on one slide, 18 August 1994, slide # 751a; Paratypes – 1 slide (# 751b) pre-
pared from material collected in the same locality on the same date, containing 7 females,
1 male and 1 nymph; coll. G. Ripka.
E
TYMOLOGY
– The specific designation is derived from the name of country of Avars,
a nation in the early Middle Ages, who lived in the Carpathian Basin.
O
THER MATERIAL
– Other specimens collected from the same host plant in Budapest,
district XIII, Angyalföld, on 14 November 2001, from the base of petiole, and among the
hairs of the bud scales, and mounted on slides, are in the author’s collection and deposited
in the Pest Management Department, Plant Protection, Soil Conservation and Agri-environ-
ment Directorate, Central Agricultural Office, Budapest, Hungary.
R
EMARKS
– The new species is similar in morphology to Eriophyes ilicifoliae Keifer,
from which it differs in number of striae (10) on female genital coverflap, and the shape of
microtubercles (somewhat acuminate) (Keifer, 1941).
Eriophyes hunniacus n. sp.
D
IAGNOSIS
– prodorsal shield pattern composed of two thin incomplete admedian
lines; two very short and faint submedian lines. Empodium 4-rayed, coxae with dense gran-
ules; microtuberculate semiannuli between coxae and genital region.
