Author made a regular mite collectings between 1990 and 2003 on ornamental trees and shrubs, on
streets, parks, green spaces of housing estates, botanical gardens and private gardens, in various localities of
Hungary. During this survey two new tree-infesting Cecidophyes and Eriophyes, a new Rhyncaphytoptus and Ac-
eria species were collected:
Cecidophyes siculus n. sp.,
Cecidophyes sanctiregisladislai n. sp.,
Eriophyes avar-
icus n. sp.,
Eriophyes hunniacus n. sp.,
Rhyncaphytoptus arpadi n. sp., and
Aceria magyarica n. sp. are described
and illustrated from Acer pseudoplatanus, Quercus robur and Quercus cerris, Platanus hybrida, Pinus nigra,
Quercus robur, respectively.
Keywords: Eriophyidae, Cecidophyes, Eriophyes, Aceria, Diptilomiopidae, Rhyncaphytoptus.
A considerable number of eriophyoid mites live on trees (mega- and mesophanero-
phytes) and shrubs (micro- and nanophanerophytes) as well as on herbaceous plants.
Gall mites were reported earlier in Hungary by Rainiss (1940), Farkas (1966), Ripka
(1997), Ripka et al. (2002, 2005), Gólya et al. (2001, 2002) and Skoracka (2005).
Ripka and de Lillo (1997), Ripka (1997) reported the eriophyoid mite fauna of or-
namental trees and shrubs in Hungary. Skoracka (2005) described two new grass-infesting
species. The Hungarian eriophyoid fauna consisting of 348 species is considerably ex-
plored (Ripka 2007, 2008).
A total of 900, 43, 299 and 80 species are known from the largest genus Aceria Keifer,
1944 (Fam. Eriophyidae), Cecidophyes Nalepa, 1887 (Fam. Eriophyidae), Eriophyes von
Siebold, 1851 (Fam. Eriophyidae) and Rhyncaphytoptus Keifer, 1939 (Fam. Diptilomiopi-
dae), respectively (Amrine et al. 2003). Neither Cecidophyes nor Eriophyes species have
been described by this time from sycamore maple (Acer pseudoplatanus), London planetree
(Platanus hybrida) and Austrian pine (Pinus nigra), respectively (Amrine and Stasny 1994,
1996). Cecidophyes tristernalis (Nalepa) is known from European turkey oak (Quercus cer-
ris). Aceria ilicis (Canestrini) and
Aceria quercinus (Canestrini) are known from English oak
(Quercus robur), Aceria cerreus (Nalepa) and
Aceria cerrigemmarum (Nalepa) have been
described up to now from European turkey oak (Amrine and Stasny 1994, 1996). Rhynca-
phytoptus farkaschi Livshitz, Mitrofanov and Vasilyeva, and
Rhyncaphytoptus cerrifoliae
Farkas as well as
Rhyncaphytoptus longisetosus Farkas are described from English oak and
European turkey oak, respectively. On London planetree, and on Austrian pine Rhyncaphy-
toptus platani Keifer and
Platyphytoptus sabinianae Keifer, are known from Hungary, re-
spectively. On sycamore maple, on English oak, and on European turkey oak 11, 4 and 8
eriophyoid species are known from Hungary, respectively (Ripka 2007, 2008).
