These days, an increasing number of people choose to have children later in life. I believe the 
reasons for this are often related to career aspirations, personal development and striving for a 
better financial footing. There are both advantages and disadvantages to this decision, but I 
believe the former slightly outweigh the latter.
Among many reasons that can explain the given trend, the main ones are related to personal 
growth which includes career and financial goals. People simply want to spend more time 
developing themselves before taking on the responsibility of a parent. Since there are more 
educational opportunities, some people also spend significantly more years studying, which may 
help them find a better job. Money is also an inseparable part of this conversation because some 
future parents want to be in a better financial position to have fewer challenges when raising a 
child.
With regard to advantages of the given tendency, I believe people may enjoy more time dedicated 
for themselves, which can also help better prepare for a life with children. This preparation does 
not only include building a certain degree of wealth, but also reaching a certain level of emotional 
maturity. In other words, people marrying at ages of 18-21 may not be mentally ready and thus 
struggle in nurturing children. In addition to the maturity aspect, people who spend more time for 
their careers may be more fulfilled thanks to their professional achievements.
As for the disadvantages, they are obviously related to societal criticism, fewer years of life with 
children and less physical energy. In many cultures, especially Eastern ones, people who want to 
have children later in life are often criticized because of how family-oriented the culture can be. 
Thus, delaying childbearing can create more pressure for an individual. The physical element 
cannot be overlooked as well since men and women who have late marriages can find raising 
children more difficult due to the amount of physical action required. Finally, a person who had his 
children after hitting, say, 35 years old, may not enjoy a long period with children due to ageing.
