Chest discomfort. 
Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that 
lasts for more than a few minutes, or goes away and comes back. The discomfort can feel 
like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness, or pain. 

Discomfort in other areas of the upper body. 
Can include pain or discomfort in 
one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw, or stomach. 

Shortness of breath. 
Often comes along with chest discomfort. But it also can occur 
before chest discomfort. 

Other symptoms.
May include breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea, or 
light-headedness. 
Learn the signs- but also remember: Even if you are not sure it 
is a heart attack, you should still have it checked out. Fast

Women and Heart Attacks
 
Knowing that heart disease is the number one killer of men and women, there are differences in 
how women and men respond to a heart attack. If you’re a woman, you may not believe you’re 
as vulnerable to a heart attack as men – but you are. Women account for nearly half of all heart 
attack deaths. Women are also less likely than men to believe they are having a heart attack and 
more likely to delay in seeking emergency treatment.

Women tend to be about 10 years older than men when they have a heart attack. They are more 
likely to have other conditions, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and congestive heart 
failure – making it that much more important to get proper treatment fast. 
Women should learn the heart attack warning signs as mentioned above, i.e. pain, discomfort in 
your chest, shortness of breath, nausea, etc. The most common heart attack symptom for men 
and women is chest pain or discomfort. Yet women are somewhat more likely than men to 
experience some of the other common symptoms, like shortness of breath, nausea/vomiting,
and back or jaw pain.
