status as a UN trust territory administered by Britain and merges with British
Somaliland to form Somalia.

In 1960 Dahomey, the Ivory Coast, Mali, Mauritania,
Niger, Senegal and the Upper Volta gain independence from France. Dahomey
is known as Benin from 1975.
Nigeria:
In 1960 Nigeria gains independence from Britain.
Sierra Leone:
In 1961 Sierra Leone gains independence from Britain.
Algeria:
In 1961 Algeria gains independence from France.
Tanzania:
In 1961 Tanganyika gains independence from Britain, followed by

Southern Rhodesia:
In 1965 Southern Rhodesia declares itself independent
from Britain.
