higher rates of species loss, and the rate of species loss today is comparable to those periods of mass 
extinction. The current extinction we are experiencing, however, differs significantly from previous 
mass extinctions in that it is caused by human activity. Three human activities in particular have a 
significant impact: 1) destruction of habitat, 2) introduction of exotic species, and 3) over-harvesting. 
According to predictions, between 10 and 50 percent of species will disappear within the next century, 
which is a very short period of time in geological terms. Only five other mass extinctions of this 
magnitude have occurred on the planet's history, and each of these extinctions was brought about by 
cataclysmic events that altered the course of the history of life

In 1988, British environmentalist Norman Myers developed a conservation concept to identify 
areas rich in species and at significant risk for species loss: 
biodiversity hotspots
. 
Biodiversity 
hotspots
are geographical areas that contain high numbers of endemic species. A sort of conservation 
triage, the idea's goal was to pinpoint key planet-wide areas for conservation efforts. Governments 
are able to protect more species by preserving hotspots. A hotspot was originally defined as having 
at least 1500 endemic plant species and 70 percent of the area disturbed by human activity. There are 
currently 34 biodiversity hotspots (Figure 172) with significant concentrations of endemic species, 
including half of all endemic plant species.
