and display them very quickly producing a moving 
image. Then inventors around the world began 
to develop cameras that could record mult iple 
frames in

second and the cinema was born!
LESSON 3 History of the. cinema
The very next year Thomas Edison, 
founder of the Edison Laboratory 
and inventor of the light bulb, wanted 
to use this machine. He im m ediately 
asked his com pany’s photographer 
William Dickinson to create a m a­
chine that would allow seeing more 
than just

images in succession. 
William D ickinson’s idea was revo I u- 
tionary - the kinetoscope.
In order to do this, M uybridge set up 12 ca­
meras along the racetrack. Then he took the 12 
images from the racetrack. These images could 
be viewed in succession on a machine Zoopra- 
xiscope that he had invented. That made it seem 
like the images them selves were moving. It was 
the first step to motion pictures as we know it.
The story of the movies began in 
the 1870s with Edward M uybridge. 
He was one of the pioneers of pho­
tography, and he is called the father 
of the moving image. He met a man 
named Leland Stanford, who asked 
if it was possible to see the m om ent 
when all four feet of a horse were in 
the air during a gallop?
