Unfortunately, it now appears that several more tree varieties are under threat. There 
are a number of plant pests and diseases that have come into the country, and these 
are having a disastrous effect on certain species. The best thing people can do is plant 
a variety of species rather than one particular type, even if it’s supposedly a disease- 
resistant one. People do need to treat the issue seriously, and I’m afraid not everybody 
quite realises the threat our trees and forests are facing. Once a disease is in the 
country, we are helpless to prevent its spread. So we need to tackle the problem by 
planning ahead.
