Performance curve for centrifugal pump
Performance curve is developed by plotting differential head against capacity. Efficiency of the
pump can be indicated on the same graph. For a given type and design of pump, the performance
will depend on the impeller diameter, the pump speed, and the number of stages.
Generally, head required is more than head produced by single-stage pumps. Several wheels can
be introduced in series to achieve multi-stage performance. Whether it is horizontally or vertically
configurated, the number of stages is restricted only by temperature and mechanical factors. Pump
manufacturers publish families of operating curves for the range of pumps they sell. These can be
used to select the best pump for a given duty.
