‘Arcadia’ connects the dots
Tom Stoppard’s intellectually dazzling 1993
play “Arcadia" is the current offering being pre
sented by the Theatre Conspiracy.
“Arcadia” concerns the relationship between
opposites, past and present, order versus disorder,
eertainty/uncertainty. Even the title "Arcadia” is
not random, for according to the dictionary
.....Arcadia - a city in S.W. California, town in
N.W. Louisiana, a mountainous region of ancient
Greece, traditionally known for the Contented,
Pastoral Innocence of its people.
The people in Stoppard’s “Arcadia” are any
thing but contented, pastoral or innocent; this
theme of contradiction resonates throughout this
brilliantly written play. Critics have praised this
play as one of the finest modem plays to come
from the pen of one of the most significant of pres
ent day contemporary playwrights.
T h o u g h
this play finds Stoppard at
his most opulently wordy,
it is far from being “hot
air.” What it is, is a telling
tale of two centuries in
pseudo pastoral England,
full of pretentious inno
cence, driven by unadul
terated, panting adultery.
And it’s not just phys
ical passion. This play
opens with a question
posed
by
Thomisina
(delightfully portrayed by
Holly Hagan), a preco
ciously brilliant 13-year-
old math and science stu
dent in the year 1809,
asking her tutor Septimus
Hodge (Juan Alejandro);
“just what is a carnal
embrace?”
But good old carnal
lust is only one of the
questions and elements
that drives these complex
people and complex ques
tions that stimulates both
these characters as well
all the characters in
“Arcadia” and even the play itself.
This voracious human need to acquire
knowledge, whether carnal, mathematical,
botanical, historical or metaphysical, is what
drives this challenging play. It is this force to
discover what lies underneath, not only the
concealing garments, but also what is under
neath the clouds of dusty layers of family
history.
According to the playwright, it is not the
answers or the success in resolving these
quests for knowledge, all of that is irrelevant,
since full and true knowledge of anything is
nigh impossible. It’s the old “just wait a
minute and all will be revealed,” just a bit
differently (my little add on). This particular
theme is beautifully put by one of the char
acters at the end of the play when she says,
“it’s the wanting to know that makes us mat
in a synopsis I read about the play (when I saw it in the
Berkshires one summer): “This play is set in a country house,
Sidley Park, in Derbyshire, and follows the lives of people liv
ing there in the 1800s and present day. This is a rich play with
more questions than answers. It involves philosophy, history,
classic literature, and mystical poets like Lord Byron, landscape
design, murder speculations, population dynamics, mathemati
cal algorithms and thermodynamics. And everything comes
together perfectly. Some of the characters even investigate sci
ence that challenges Newton’s theories of physics.”
All in all every theme seems to evolve from the source of
love and death, making “Arcadia” thrilling, funny as well as
scary. 'Bottom line: this is a play for folks not needing to be
served all the answers in a neat little package, but do desire to
interpret and form their opinions as they take them in during or
after the play, on the trip home. This is one play where the
answers are not as important as the conversations that follow.
The cast and director Bill Taylor are to be commended for
undertaking such an intellectually challenging play; a play
where when all is said and done one does care about the char
acters, and this can be attributed to direction and the actors por
traying the characters.
If you like connecting the dots between mathematics, phi
losophy, science, progress, and contemplation on the meaning
and connection of past to present, then “Arcadia” is a play for
you.

Island dancers take top
honors in Tampa event
Special to the Islander
A pair of islanders finished
in the top spot at a grueling
one-day event in Tampa on
March 15.
The routine leading up to
the Spring Fling competition
was tough, instructor, dance
partner and Island Ballroom
owner David Floiy said. He
danced with islander Laurie
Pickens, taking honors in the
Top Bronze division. Some
100 couples joined in the
statewide competition, Flory
said.
The day’s routine included
wake-up time at 6 a.m., make
up, design hair for the day, and
lace the dance shoes. These
are some of the thoughts stir
ring through Laurie Pickens’s
mind as she prepared for a
long day of dancing, Flory
said.
Running through the dances in her head,
Pickens had to mentally prepare for the chal
lenges ahead. First dance of the day, waltz.

remembering to take long
strides across the dance, fin
ish arm styling, head posi
tioned just right, here we
go...and off, over and over,
Flory said.
Flory guided the duo and
made adjustments as needed
throughout the day. The ball
room dance couple had been
training aggressively for the
day, the moment, he said.
“W e’ve been working
extremely hard, two hours a
day for close to two weeks,”
Flory said.
Pickens and Flory danced
11 different styles of dance in
130 round-robin heats in the
daylong competition. At the
end of it all, smiles on their
faces as they danced away
from Tampa with top honors.
The two earned “Top Overall
Competitor” and first place in their division.
“All of our hard work has paid off. I’m
grateful to have such an awesome and dedi
cated dance partner as Laurie,” Flory said.

An alligator’s view
of paved roads
My community in Sanibel is divided over the
issue of whether or not to pave the roads. This
issue has pitted neighbor against neighbor and res
idents against alliga
tors.
What is at stake is
the very survival of
Sanibel, the perpetu
ity
of
blackened
fish, the life span of
manatees and the
number
of
Dr.
Scholl’s shoe inserts
worn on our roads.
Even our commu
nity alligator is tom
over this issue. Will it
be more comfortable
sliding along paved
or hard dirt roads?
Whichever way the
alligator decides will
be the way the community votes.
The alligator was sitting in his office the other
day as community residents lined up to meet with
it to present their views on the roads. Each resi
dent brought a gift for the alligator. The first resi
dent in line was ushered into the alligator’s office.
He said, “Hi, Al. I’ve brought you your favorite
desert. It’s insect mud pie.”
The alligator stifled a yawn lest he devour the
head of the visitor.
He said: “Please don’t try to bribe me. I will
make my decision just as soon as I’ve heard all the
arguments. I’d like to know why this community
is so divided over our roads.”
The resident looked around to make sure he
wasn’t being overheard.
“Well, Al. I ’m for paving. I have scientific
studies I can present to you that prove that paved
roads are easier on alligator flesh than unpaved
roads. These studies were conducted in the
Amazon jungle among twelve hundred alliga
tors. Half crawled on their bellies on paved roads
and the other half on dirt. Those alligators that
crawled on paved roads had fewer rashes, road
bums, shingles, and bad breath episodes than their
counterparts who crawled on dirt.”
The alligator smoked his pipe, blew a smoke
ring and looked at the insect mud pie longingly.
“Was there any downside to the alligators that
crawled on paved roads?”
The visitor paused for a moment and said: “Just
one. The alligators that were put on the paved
roads were able to achieve crawling speeds of up
to forty miles an hour. The paving was so smooth
that they glided effortlessly. They would occasion
ally knock over giraffes and lions along the
way. None of the other wildlife could keep up with
them.”
“And was there any upside to the alligators that
crawled on the dirt roads? You’ve told me what
the downside was.”
The visitor referred to some documents he was
carrying and said, “The alligators that used the dirt
roads became more laid back, mellow and friend
ly. Their rashes, road bums, shingles and bad
breath led to their being medicated a great deal. So
they slowed up their crawling pace on the dirt
roads until they moved at the rate of five feet an
hour.”
“So what do you think the implications are for
paved or unpaved roads right here?” the alligator
asked.
The visitor said, “My coalition believes that so
long as you agree to limit the speed limit of your
crawling, you will be a lot healthier on paved
roads. You wouldn’t need to get medicated.”
“What type of medication were those Amazon
jungle alligators that were put on dirt roads tak-

Side note:
The Sanibel-Captiva Charter Chapter of the American Business Women’s
Association is happy to present one of its own members, Valerie Tutor, as
the featured speaker at the April 2015 monthly meeting. Her presentation
‘The 3 C’s of Success in the Workplace” will focus on skills that nourish and
sustain successful team relationships in the workplace. The meeting is
scheduled for Tuesday, April 14, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Registration will
begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Sundial Beach Resort, 1451 Middle Gulf Drive,
Sanibel. Meeting and dinner will begin at 6 p.m. The meetings are held the
second Tuesday of each month. Guests are welcome. If you are interested
in attending, please contact membership chair Carol Schapiro at (239) 850-

The American Business W omen’s
Association
Sanibel-Captiva
Charter
Chapter will host its second annual “Little
Black Dress for Education” fundraising din
ner at the Sundial
Resort on March 26.
The event kicks off at 6
p.m.
The event is the
prime funding tool for
the islands' networking
o r g a n i z a t i o n .
Organizers started the
event last year as a
luncheon and black
dress fashion show, this
year moved it to the
evening at Sundial, publicity chair Valerie
Tutor said. The group hopes to raise up to
$20,000 with raffles and auctions and tick
ets, Tutor said. The Sanibel-Captiva chapter
has some 80 members, admitting a few men
to the group in the last year, she said.
“We are really looking forward to the
event,” said Tutor, who is an island realtor
and will speak at an April 14 Association
meeting.
The Little Black Dress supports educa
tion through fundraising for scholarships,
annual grants, and professional develop
ment. The success of this event depends on
the generosity of businesses and community
members. The support allows the organiza
tion to continue to touch the lives of many
women in the community.
Event organizers wanted to thank
Premier Live Auction Sponsors, Debonair
Concierge Travel Services and Congress
Jewelers and M olloy and Dehaan-
