That’s not taking away to m our old faithful, but it just invoked more excitement.” One of the new dealers joining the show for the first time was Joan Datesman, who is an accomplished author and an authority on Quimper. She brought with her some beautiful antique quilts which made for a great addition to the appearance of the show. She sold several of these quilts and her selection of French Quimper included some extremely rare pieces which were all more than 100 years old. On of those “old faithful” dealers is Joyce Bowman, has participated in the Sanibel show for more than 20 years. She brings “tosh, exciting and very interesting items to each of the shows.” Her items include linens, lamps, militaiy medals, watch es, tin toys and lots and lots of ephemera. “One of our dearest regular dealers, Patty Timson, sets up the most beautiful booth comprised of Weller. McCoy and Roseville,” Taylor said. “She decorates her booth with to sh cut flowers, many of which come to m her garden. Her hus band Stan Timson is an accomplished artist in a gallery on Sanibel. who ads to the beauty of the booth by providing his own paintings for sale. “These acrylic on canvas are Sanibel Island subject mat ter. They will both be here at the March show, as will Joyce and Bob.” Expectations are even higher for the March show, with eight first-time dealers. They include a gentleman and his wife to m western New York who will bring small pieces of fine antique furniture and antique lamps. They will either ship the items to your location or provide a delivery service if needed. Creations by Caty will be back again this show. He and his wife, Sky, bring serious pieces of jewelry. He does quality jewelry repair at the show both days, as well as creating his own items. Rosemarie Riddelll, is bringing a fresh selection of antique and estate jewelry to the March show. She and her husband. Bill, have been regulars with beautiful 19th Century pieces of jewelry, porcelain and silver for sale. “This year’s March show is being advertised as an Estate Jewelry Sale, as well as an Antiques Show,” Taylor said. “That is not to say that all there is is jewelry. There is so much more. This fine selec tion of dealers have put in a pointed effort to bring a wide diversity of fresh, exciting and quality items. There will be something for all collectors and enthusiasts.”

Letters to the Editor Traffic tops islander’s concerns To the editor City Hall has finally noticed the long line of idling autos on Periwinkle. Our newest coun cil member, a self-styled authority on govern ment affairs, should have some ideas on the traffic problem but he would leave it to “experts.” His father had better ideas. Mr. Jennings, who said traffic is good for business, has had second thoughts and would “see what other cities do.” Why haven’t any of Sanibel’s business own ers complained? It is difficult to visit stores, such as Ace Hardware, and on leaving it is almost impossible to make a left turn. One of the planning commissioners must have become stuck in traffic, because planning director Jim Jordan said, “Traffic is the top issue on the island we will be talking about.” The Metropolitan Planning Organization suggests a traffic roundabout at Periwinkle and the Causeway. Have you ever driven through a roundabout? Wow, it is really fun. If you acci dently get in the wrong lane, you spin around and around until you either become dizzy and lose control of the car or run out of gas. Do the planners think a roundabout will solve the mile- long backup at the toll booth? Will it help motorists make a left turn on Periwinkle? Mr. Jason Maugham, a member of the plan ning commission, said, “If it fails, we can rip it out.” Isn’t that about the dumbest thing a lawyer ever said? With a lawyer, an insurance sales man and a physician on the planning commis sion, someone should be literate enough to read the Sanibel Plan that has the solution to our traf fic problems. The Sanibel Report of 1974, the basis for the plan, on page 150 says: “Many other areas in this state willingly provide for and solicit the tourist trade. Sanibel offers unique charms for which some people will pay a premium while they last. But if they are destroyed by over use, the city will have little to offer.”
The plan also states, “It has become clear that the provisions of additional road capacity through road widening or a bypass route is not in the best interests of the city. Increased road way capacity would make Sanibel a less attrac tive place to live and visit.” (page 86) The plan further states, “The city has clearly indicated that the desired long-term approach to manage traffic is to reduce volume rather than increase capacity.” (page 88) The suggestion to reduce traffic is even more explicit on page 92: “Restrict auto access and auto travel within Sanibel. Restrict Sanibel access to a maximum vehicular hourly ‘cap.’” Is the plan dead? Has the city council and the chamber of commerce eviscerated the bedrock of Sanibel? If the plan is still alive, here are suggestions to lower our volume of traffic. 1. Double tollway fees for nonresidents of Sanibel and Captiva. 2. It should be the civic responsibility for the sponsors of the shell and arts and craft fairs to move these events to downtown Fort Myers or the Lee County Convention Center. 3. Insist on pre-paid advance reservations for parking on public beaches and to enter the wildlife refuge. 4. Establish electronic signs before the causeway, announcing, “Sanibel is full.”

Place eg g s into a saucepan in a single layer and Ml will water covering eggs by 1 inch. Cover saucepan and bring to boil over high heal. Remove from heat and let eg g s stan d in hot water for 15 minute*. Drain. Cool eggs under cold running water. Peel once cold. Halve eg g s lengthwise and scoop yolk Into a bowl, 2. Fill a g la ss 2/3 full with water. Add a ts p of elder vinegar and 3 d ro p s of food coloring. Add a couple of halved eg g s to ab so rb the color. Remove with a spoon when they are a pastel color. Drain on a paper towel Repeat with different colors. 3. In th e bowl, mash the yolk with a fork Stir In may on ase, spicy brown mustard, hot mustard, sugar, salt and pepper into the yoiks until well combined Spoon into a quart-size, reseafable plastic bag. Snip a corner of the bag. 4. Squeeze the yolk mixture into the eg g halves and sprinkle with paprika.
