Conclusion
In the novels all social problems are dramatized through the characters and their situations. The reader learns about the group of people striking tor highter wages from a conversation between easy and Tom Joad. The strike which Steinbeck creates here provides the ultimate climax for the social issue, which he has been presenting throughout the novel. The characters who are involved in this
situation are essential in that they provide an explanation for the necessity of the action itself. Thus, it is necessary to view Steinbeck 's characters in terms of hie
primary purpose in the novel. In “The Grapes ot Wrath” he did not intend for his eharacters to stand apart as individuals. He uses the characters as a device through
which he can communicate his ideas to the reader. Whether these characters are fully developed is not important as long as they convey his theory about them.
To judge Steinbeck's presentation of character, it is necessary to evaluate his method of characterization. As do all oth9r novelists, he uses the four ways in which an author can indicate character. However, unlike most authors, these four ways of indicating character do not form his method of characterization. Steinbeck 's method varies between his use of characters to represent humanity, a
social issue, a concept, and his presentation of characters as types of individuals, or distinct individuals. His use of these methods can be traced through the majority of his other novels. In “Of Mice and Men” and “The Pastures of Heaven, Steinbeck 's characters represent humanity, while in “The Grapes of Wrath” and “In Dubious Battle”, the characters represent a concept or a social issue. In “Of Mice and Men” the characters represent both humanity and a social issue. Steinbeck presents characters as individuals in “The Moon is Down”, “East of Eden”, and “The Winter of our Discontent”. In “The Wayward Bus”, “Tortilla f'lat”, “Cannery Row”, and “Sweet Thursday”, he presents the characters as types of individuals. In his novels Steinbeck has a purpose for presenting his chararter as he does. With this purpose in mind, he make his character's conform to his ideas about them. Indeed, the people of the twentieth century are forbinate, because "…an American writer had appeared with a sure and subtle sense for literary effect, a storyteller worthy to be compared with Chekhov or Anatole France for his skill in shaping up stuff of human lives forms that delight the mind and imagination.”80
In conclusion, it can be said that even if the events of the novel cover the period from April to July - a short period of time, it is enough for the spiritual decline of a person. In this way, the author shows how low a person can be in his life, and for this he should try to keep himself honest. Any spiritual decline will not leave its impact on the next generation, so no material thing can be superior to children.
