Prior to performing any surgical procedure, the physician shall inform the surgical patient of the opportunity to receive an autologous, designated or homologous blood transfusion if a transfusion becomes necessary, and of the positive and negative aspects of each, unless such communication is medically contraindicated or the surgery is performed on an emergent basis. This communication will be noted on the medical record and will occur so as to allow adequate time, prior to surgery, for the pre-donation to occur.
