13.1 WASTE TREATMENT METHODS
Small amounts of dilute hydrochloric acid can be flushed down a sink with a large quantity of water,
unless local rules prohibit this. Larger amounts should be neutralized before disposal. Concentrated
acid should not be flushed down a sink but should be neutralized first. Great care must be taken when
doing this, since the reaction of concentrated acid with a base is likely to be violent. The acid should
be well diluted with water before small amounts of base are added cautiously, with stirring.
