Some think that teenagers should follow older people’s rules. Others thinks that it is natural for them to challenge what older people say.
Discuss both views and give your opinion.
Teenagers should generally be expected to abide by rules set by their seniors. Some, however, would argue that it is not uncommon to see young people, especially teenagers, to question such rules. I tend to share the former view.
At the outset, it is essential to consider the case against following elderly’s rules. The main argument here is applicability. That is, old rules, as the name suggests, reflect the norms and traditions of the past. As such, they may fail to account for recent changes such as advances in technology and fast pace of life. Being inapplicable under many instances, such incongruency of rules is bound to give rise to a conflict of beliefs of two generations, creating feelings of mutual animosity and disconnectedness. Besides, teenagers, much like children, tend to be curious by nature. Hence, teenagers’ attempts to question authority should not be seen as an act of rebellion, but rather that of inquisitiveness.
I, on the other hand, would advocate for following of rules by teenagers. This is clearly because old people are more experienced and, for the most part, wiser than their younger counterparts. This fact entitles them to dictate their juniors rules and guide them through life. Were it not for their sound advice and wisdom, most teenagers would not fare well in life due to their lack of experience in critical matters such as career choice, dating, and so on. Teenagers also tend to make poor decisions owing to their impulsive nature. They are often guided by their emotions, not reason, which make them prone to bad decision-making. Making a bad decision, in turn, predisposes them to problems and pitfalls of life.
Having considered this topic from both angles, I would encourage young people, youngsters in particular, to heed the guidance of their elderly unless they are to experience major setbacks in life.
