Some people say that a lot of the scientific research done today is a waste of time and money. To what extent do you agree or disagree? A large amount of scientific research being carried out in many areas these days is regarded by some people as a waste of valuable resources, such as time and money. While I agree that this might be the case in some disciplines of science, I don’t deem expending time and money on other science domains useless.
Admittedly, investing millions of dollars and years in science spheres like space exploration and geology can be fruitless. It has been predicted in 1950s that the humanity will colonize other planets which might support life such as Mars over the next three decades. However, neither the former USSR nor the USA were able to accomplish it, and even a lot of money and time is being squandered to no avail, because there is still no definite proof that we will one day be able to live there. The same holds true for geological research; despite having access to state-of-the-art technology developed over many years, researchers had been unable to predict accurately the occurrence of earthquakes in Turkey and Syria that claimed thousands of lives and dealt catastrophic damage. In this regard, space exploration and geological research could be seen as a waste of precious resources.
However, expending money and time on the fields of medicine and chemistry is surely worth it. This is because we have solid proofs of pieces of research done in these. For example, were it not COVID-19 vaccines, fruits of extensive medical research, probably a large proportion of humans would probably pass away in 2020 and 2021. Chemistry is another area of research, which proved itself worthy of billions of dollars of expenditure and dozens of years of time. Conveniences including but not limited to cheap, artificial fibers that replaced cotton, plastic pipes carrying running water, and soundproof windows in our homes are all results of chemical research.
In conclusion, on disciplines of science - where humans have little control over - such as space and geological research, expending time and money might be of no use. Nevertheless, this is not true when it comes to other areas of scientific research like medicine and chemistry.
