40 – 50 minutes (may be extended over several class sessions)
Preparation and Materials:
None
Instructions:
Divide the students into small groups. Brainstorm the mood of the song (happy, 
sad). Then, brainstorm the background of the songwriter (age, personality). Then, brainstorm 
some reasons the songwriter wrote the song. Finally, the students will write a story about the 
life of the songwriter before they wrote the song. Share stories when groups are finished.

The blues came from African-American musical traditions including the songs from the time of 
slavery. Originally, most blues music was sung by an individual performer, accompanied on a
