Methods of Riveting
HEAVY METALS

  1. Lay out the location of the rivet holes. The rivets should be located at least two shank diameters from lhe edge of the joint and at least three diameters from other rivets. Select a drill of the same diameter as the rivet shank. Drill the holes at the proper locations. It is good practice to drill all the rivet holes in one piece first. Then drill one hole in the second piece. After one rivet has been installed, the other holes can be drilled accurately, using the top piece as a guide.

  2. If countersunk rivets are used, countersink both pieces. Even when roundhead or flathead rivets are used, the second piece is often countersunk. Thus, the rivet can be flattened and filed off to form a flush surface. It is a good ides to countersink all holes slightly to remove the bun- formed by drilling.

  3. Insert the rivets in the holes. The shank should extend beyond the metal about one and one - half times lhe shank’s diameter. If the back surface is to be countersunk and the shank flattened, about three - fourths of the shank’s diameter is needed.

  4. When using roundhead rivets, protect the head by placing it over a rivet block or set. To form the second head, strike the shank squarely with the ball-peen end of the hammer. This will round off the shank. Be careful not to bend it.

RIVETING SHEET METAL

  1. Lay out the locations for the rivets and then punch or drill the holes. When using th eh and punch, place the metal over a block of wood.

  2. Insert a rivet in a hole. Place the work-piece over a solid metal surface.

  3. With arivetset, draw the seams together.

  4. Strike the rivet with the hammer to set the rivet enough to hold the pieces together.

RIVEING WITH A POP RIVETER
The easiest and fastest method of riveting is to use a tool called a pop riveter. This tool eliminates the need for setting and flattening rivets by hand. With the pop riveter, rivets can be installed in holes where there is not enough space to useregular riveting tools.
Unlike hand-installed rivets, pop rivets are hollow. They have a flange that grips the work on one end and a pin, or mandrel, which is set in the riveter. The body of the rivet is placed in the hole. By squeezing the handles of the riveter, the mandrel is pulled out of the rivet body until it breaks away from the ball-like head. By this time the head is firmly imbedded in the rivet body and therivet is securely installed.
Always use pop rivets of the same metal as the metal in the product to be joined. Rivets are available in diameters of 3/32”, 1/8”, 5/32”, 3/16”, and They are made of aluminum, steel, copper and stain less steel.
