The electronic long cane (ELC):

ELC is a development of the traditional
cane in order to provide an accurate detection of the objects that are around
the user. A small grip of the cane consists of an embedded electronic circuit
that includes an ultrasonic sensor for detection process, micro-motor
actuator as the feedback interface, and a 9 V battery as a power supplier.
This grip is able to detect the obstacles above the waistline of the blind
person. A tactile feedback through a vibration will be produced as warning to

a close obstacle. The frequency of the feedback will be increased as the blind
person gets closer to the obstacle.

Proposed work
We created one of the simple smart canes for our experiment. It
incorporates the following components, which includes an ultrasonic sensor
to detect obstacle in front of the visually impaired person, a buzzer for alerting
person through speech output. We were able to define duration using
Arduino software which read the echoPin and returned the travel time of the
sound wave in microseconds. After that, the distance between the object and
the ultrasonic sensor could be calculated by applying distance formula which
is duration multiply by speed of the sound divided by two. When the distance
is less than 15 cm, the buzzer will make sound and led will be on.
It should be noted at this stage that this work has been thoroughly carried
out in order to design and implement an articulate walking bolt for the blind.
The Smart Stick acts as a versatile interface for easy and comfortable
internal and external mobility for visually impaired people in the next phase
of more supportive apps. It's safe and affordable. It offers low cost, reliable,
lightweight, low power and efficient navigation with fast, quick response times.
Wireless connectivity between components of the device will enhance the
additional features of this instrument and increase the range of ultrasound
sensors and incorporate technologies to measure the intensity of obstacles
approaching. With this approach, our targets in all of the developing countries
were particularly addressed towards visually impaired and blind people. In this
analysis the machine built can only sense obstacles and humidity.
