10. Sociolinguistics:
- the study of the relationship between language and society or the study of the interaction between language and the structure and functioning of society.
- the study of language in relation to social fuctors, that is social class, educational level and type of education, age, sex, ethnic origin, etc. Linguists differ as to what they include under sociolinguistics. Many would include the detailed study of interpersonal communication, sometimes called micro – sociolinguistics, i.e. speech act, speech events, sequencing of utterances, and also those investigations which relate variation in the language used by a group of people to social factors.

GLOSSARY:
In the tests there may be questions concerning the linguistic terms. The students will have to be able to give their definitions. There are some examples below: what do adjectives express or what group of words are called adjectives?
Adjective – a word that describes the thing, quality, state which a noun refers to.
Adjunct – is part of the basic structure of a word combination in which it occurs as its dependent component.
Agglutinating language – a language in which various affixes may be added to the stem of a word to express its grammatical function in sentences.
Allophone – is any of the different forms of one and the same phoneme
Allomorph – is any of the different forms of one and the same morpheme
Aspect – is a grammatical category of verbs which deals with how the event is viewed, such as whether it is in progress or momentary.
Auxiliary verb – a verb another verb in speech and which shows grammatical functions such as voice, tense, aspect, posterity and so on.
Case – is a grammatical category which shows the function of the noun in a sentence.
Collocation – is the way in which o used together regularly? It refers to the restrictions on how words can be used together, for example which verbs, nouns, adjectives may be used together, for example which verbs, nouns, adjectives may be used together in speech.
Comparative degree – the form of an adjective or adverb which is used to show compassion between two – things.
Comparative historical linguistics – a brunch of linguistics which studies language change and language relationships. By comparing languages it is possible to reveal whether they are related to each – other or not.
