Lead-in (5 min.): Teacher asks the questions: 
1. What is crime? 
2. Who investigates crimes? 
3. Who sentences people? 
4. Who live in cells? 
5. Who decides if someone is innocent or guilty? 
6. Who defend people and present evidence? 
7. Who commit crimes? 
Handout 1. Law vocabulary 
The police 
They do a number of things. When someone 
commits a crime (= breaks the law
and does 
something 
wrong/illegal/against the
law) the police must 
investigate 
(= 
try to find out
what happened/who is responsible). If they find the person responsible for the crime, they 
arrest

take them to the police station
). At the police station, they
