27. The System o f Education in Great Britain.
T he system o f E ducation in G reat B ritain includes preschool education, prim ary 
education, secondary education and higher education. In m o st countries prim ary 
schools are sub d iv id ed into infant schools (ages 5-7) an d ju n io r schools (ages 7-
11.12). in infant schools, children are encouraged to read, w rite, count and develop, 
their creativ e abilities.
M o st child ren in G reat B ritain fallow this ro u te in the state system . A t the age 
o f 3 they go to nursery school. A t the age o f 5 everyone starts prim ary school. A t 11 
they go to a secondary school. T hey m ay be a co m p reh en siv e o r a g ram m ar school.
C h ild ren selected for their academ ic ability at the age o f 16. T hey leave school 
and get a jo b o r go to a college for vocational training.
A t th e age o f 18 they leave school and g et a jo b o r go to U niversity go to a for 
further ed u catio n training. T he pupils have five lessons every day and all to g eth er 
they do eleven subjects a w eek plus physical education every m orning, they h ave a 
tw enty m in u te break.
I f y o u w an t to en ter U niversity, y ou m ust first pass ex am in atio n th at m ost 
students tak e a t th e age o f eighteen. M o st students take three exam ination in three 
d ifferen t subjects. T h e ju n io r stage extends o v er 4 years. C h ild ren are tau g h t 
arithm etic, reading, com position, history, g eography, nature study and o th er subjects. 
T he necessity to o rganize a school th at w o u ld accep t all the child ren from a particu lar 
area w ith o u t consideration o f their inborn ability becam e apparent in E ngland. T he 
first school o f this kind, the so called co m p reh en siv e school. T h ese schools provide 
all th e co u rses th at w ere form erly given in gram m ar technical and m odern school. 
T h ese courses include all the academ ic subjects as w ell as practical subjects like 
cooking, n eed lew o rk , gardening typing, w ood w o rk in g and m etalw orking.
T he m ain educational advantages o f the current co m p reh en siv e schools are:
1. 
they are o p en to all children o f all types o f ability from a particu lar area.
2. 
the future o f a child is not decided by the results o f tests at an early age.
3. 
a m u ch w id er range o f subjects is available to every pupil.
4. 
I f necessary a pupil can change from one course o f study to ano th er w ith o u t 
m oving to a new school.
N o w ad ay s pupils can choose their ow n curriculum and take eith er a natural science 
course.
B efore leaving secondary school betw een the ages o f 15 an d 16, schoolchildren take 
on e o r tw o sets o f exam s. In E ngland all exam inations are w ritten. A fter exam inations 
pupils get a G eneral C ertificate o f Secondary E ducation. A fte r finishing secondary 
school an d p assing advanced level. A t age 18 or 19 young peo p le m ay continue their

education universities and colleges. T here are g reat num ber o f universities and 
colleges in G reat B ritain. T he old est university tow ns are C am bridge and O xford.
It is a great honor to study at these universities. N o w there are m ore than 66 
colleges in C am bridge and O xford. Five o f them are w o m en ’s colleges. A ll students 
have to live in the colleges during their course o f study.
A fter graduating students receive b ach elo r’s degrees. Students at U niversity are 
called undergraduates w hile they are studying for their first degree. M ost U niversity 
courses lasts three years, som e courses lasts four years and o r tw o courses e.g 
m edicine m ay be longer.
W hen they finish the course and pass their exam s, they receive a degree the 
qualification w hen you com plete a university course successfully / They can be a BA 
/ B achelor o f A rts / or a BS B achelor o f sciences.
W hen people study one subjects in a great detail o f them to find new
inform ation / m e say they are conducting doing / carrying out research.
