This assignment addresses assessment criteria 2.1, 2.2, 2.3

2.1 Interpret the different ways in which tenses are formed and used in English grammar

English tenses are formed by combining one of the principal forms of a main verb with one or more auxiliary verbs. There are four principal forms: basic or root, present participle, past and past participle.

The basic form (or root) is the form listed in the dictionary, which is generally the first-person singular of the simple present tense.
To form the present participle, the suffix ing is generally added to the basic form (going, walking, doing). By this way we can form all continuous tenses with helping verbs.
As for past and past participle, it is a little trickier. If the verb is regular, ed, d is added in both past and past participle, but if the verb is irregular, it is not formed like above. For example, the past tense of the verb break is broke and the past participle is broken. They are formed according to their irregular verbs list.

2.2 Interpret the ways in which person is indicated in English grammar

In English grammar, person is a category which is used to distinguish between (1) those speaking, (2) those being addressed, and (3) those who are neither speaking nor being addressed (everybody else). Basically, these three categories are called the first person, the second person, and the third person. The personal pronouns (I, you, he, she, it, we, you, they) are grouped into one of the three categories:

1.The First Person. This category is used for the point of view of the speaker or a group that includes the speaker. A basic sentence in the first person may typically start "]" or "We" (In grammar, the first-person personal pronouns are “I, me, we, and us”.)

2. The Second Person category is used for those being spoken to. A main sentence in the second person can start "You [did something]." (In grammar, the second-person pronoun is you for both singular and plural.)

3. The Third Person category is used for everyone else except listener and speaker. A basic sentence in the third person may start with "He/ she/ they" (In grammar, the third-person pronouns are “he, him, she, her, it, they, and them”. The third person also includes all other proper nouns, e.g., Fritz, Germans.)

2.3 Interpret the ways in which number is indicated in English grammar

Number indication in English grammar,it refers to the grammatical contrast between singular and plural forms of nouns, pronouns, determiners, and verbs. Although most English nouns form the plural by adding -s or -es to their singular forms, there are numerous exceptions.
