For pumping corrosive and erosive fluid, the diaphragm is mainly preferred. In Figure 7.15 plunger
is driven by hydraulic pressure of fluid. Within low capacity system such as metering or chemical
feed pumps ball check valve is selected compared to disk and wing type check valve.
The pump shown in Figure 7.15 has one inlet and outlet. This type of pump is called single-acting.
However, there is also double-acting pump with two inlets and outlets. Second inlet and outlet are
placed on the right side of plunger, suction occurs in the one end while discharge does at the other.
When high head and low capacity is required, single-acting pump is optimum, whereas industries
where piston application is suitable, double-acting one is selected.
