The last day of Quarter 3 is Thursday, March 26. School is closed for a teacher duty day on Friday, March 27 and remains closed through April 6 for spring break. We wish everyone a well-deserved vacation. School resumes on Tuesday, April 7.

The Million Word Reader program is designed to encourage students to become enthusiastic about reading. Recognition begins at 500,000 words for 1st graders, 750,000 words for 2nd graders and 1 mil lion words for 3rd-8th graders. Rewards and recognition are given each time a stu dent reaches a new million word goal along with an exciting surprise at the end of the year. The deadline to submit entries for the Humanitarian of the Year Award is March 26. All middle school students who have completed community service hours with an organization that helps people are encouraged to apply. One winner will be selected from each grade level with $100 cash awards to the student and the organi zation they are representing. Please see Mrs. Reynolds for details regarding this award presented by the Sanibel Captiva Trust Co.
Please join us in welcoming Susan Niekamp as our new Music Teacher at The Sanibel School. Susan has experience teaching at both the elementary and middle school level. For 20 years, he was the executive direc tor of the Southwest Florida Regional Planning Council, responsible for planning services for a six-county area. Then he spent eight years as the director of the Lee County Smart Growth Initiative. And as keynote speaker at C O T I’s Annual Meeting last week, his message was clear: We need to restore full impact fees for Lee County. Daltry took

But as every Southw est Floridian knows, weather is a big issue on the coast. The National W eather Service, as well as local weather forecasters, have the best technology the world can offer for tracking dangerous weather cells and where it maybe going.
But even with all the radars, satel lites and technology, the NWS still depends on the human eye to help send out warnings and advisories. This was the topic during the

Gurhan Orhan will be at the Lily & Co. Jewelers shop M arch 28 for a meet and greet, to laser inscribe his line of jew elry between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. H e’ll also be at Lily & Co. March 27 for an invitation- only cocktail event. The New York-based designer’s visit is important because he rarely appears pub licly. His fashions are worn by the w orld’s exalted, currently carried at such places as Neiman Marcus and Saks. And, o f course, Lily. Few jew elers work in pure gold. This will be his second visit to Sanibel, Lily co-owner Dan Schuyler said. Mr. Ohran “was overwhelmed by what we do on this little island,” Schuyler said o f the famed jew eler’s visit in 2014. “W e’re very excited to have him back.” The T urkish-born G urhan O rhan, known in the industry by his first name, started making jewelry after becoming charmed with the look and feel o f pure gold. H e’s headquartered in New York City. His line is priced less than $500 to more than $ 1 00,000. Performers and the fashionable wear his jewelry at public events.
