Tamiami Trail Project will help move
water south, according to Gov. Scott
Governor Scott today announced that the Florida
Department of Environmental Protection recently issued
a permit to the Department of Interior’s National Park
Service, Everglades National Park, for the construction of
2.6 miles of bridging and road raising along the Tamiami
Trail (U.S. 41) in Miami-Dade County.
The project will deconstruct a section of the Tamiami
Trail and replace it with a bridge so that water north of
the road may flow into the Everglades, providing needed
water to the Everglades National Park.
This project will result in enhanced movement of
water south from Lake Okeechobee.
Governor Rick Scott said, “Restoring the Florida
Everglades and protecting Florida’s natural treasures is
incredibly important to protect the natural beauty of our
state. The Tamiami Trail project will help move more
water south from Lake Okeechobee which directly bene
fits the Everglades, as well as the Caloosahatchee and St.
Lucie Estuaries.
“On top of completing critical projects, we have pro
posed a dedicated source of revenue that will provide
more than $5 billion for Everglades restoration over the
next 20 years. This funding will ensure that future gener
ations of Floridians can enjoy our state’s natural beauty.”
The Tamiami Trail currently inhibits water flowing
south into Everglades National Park. By constructing
bridges, water will be able to flow more naturally to the
Park.
DEP Secretary Jon Stever,son said, “This is a huge step

Kids hunt treasure at Sanibel Historical Village
It’s time to celebrate pirates at the
Sanibel Historical Village.
Children who visit the village are
invited to go on a treasure hunt and
then choose a prize from the treasure
chest at the Rutland House.
The notorious pirate Black Caesar
made Sanibel his home for a time in the
early 1800s, building a village of
rough palm-thatched huts on the bay
side, somewhere near the old ferry
landing.
He sailed up and down the gulf
coast of South Florida, attacking and
plundering ships in search of silver and
gold. Some say he buried his treasure
on Sanibel. If so, has it ever been
found? No one knows.
On March 25, Calusa Day, there
will be a Twilight Talk by Charles
LeBuff. The Topic of LeBufPs talk is
“Getting to Know the Calusa People.”
LeBuff is the author of the best-sell
ing historical novel, “The Calusan.”
Although it is a work of fiction, this
book accurately describes the culture
of these extinct Native Americans.
Tickets are required for LeBuff’s 7
p.m. presentation at $5 per person. The
event will take place in Shore Haven.

LeB uffs talk will conclude this
year’s Calusa Day at the village. The
day begins with curator Theresa
Schober and artist Luc Century giving
a 10:45 a.m. presentation exploring the
Calusa in art.
In addition, Calusa Day will include
activities for the children including col
oring Calusa masks. There will also be
Calusa shells and pottery available for
viewing and handling.
The historical village is open from
10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdays through
Saturdays. The village is located at 950
Dunlop Road (next to BIG ARTS).
Admission is $10 for adults 18 and
older; those under 18 and members are
free.
Docent-guided tours are available at
10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. at no extra
charge, based upon docent availability.
There is handicap access to all build
ings. Admission for entrance to go only
to the Museum Store is free. For infor
