T he system o f E ducation in G reat B ritain includes preschool education, prim ary
education, secondary education and higher education. In m o st countries prim ary
schools are sub d iv id ed into infant schools (ages 5-7) an d ju n io r schools (ages 7-
11.12). in infant schools, children
are encouraged to read, w rite, count and develop,
their creativ e abilities.
M o st child ren in G reat B ritain fallow this ro u te in the state system . A t the age
o f 3 they go to nursery school. A t the age o f 5 everyone starts prim ary school. A t 11
they go to a secondary school. T hey m ay be a co m p reh en siv e o r a g ram m ar school.
C h ild ren selected for their academ ic ability at the age o f 16. T hey leave school

pupils get a G eneral C ertificate o f Secondary E ducation. A fte r finishing secondary
school an d p assing advanced level. A t age 18 or 19 young peo p le m ay continue their

colleges in G reat B ritain. T he old est university tow ns are C am bridge and O xford.
It is a great honor to study at these universities. N o w there are m ore than 66
colleges in C am bridge and O xford. Five o f them are w o m en ’s colleges. A ll students
have to live in the colleges during their course o f study.
A fter graduating students receive b ach elo r’s degrees. Students at U niversity are
called undergraduates w hile they are studying for their first degree. M ost U niversity
courses lasts three years, som e courses lasts four years and o r tw o courses e.g
m edicine m ay be longer.
W hen they finish the
course and pass their exam s, they receive a degree the
