stream.co.nz MISSION: POSSIBLE In December 2010 Venture Taranaki, the Regional Development Agency for New Zealand’s foremost energy province, released The Wealth Beneath Our Feet, a report that for the first time defined the full economic impact of the oil and gas industry to New Zealand’s economy: $2.5 billion to national GDP and employing 7,700 FTEs. The report identified that if our oil and gas and support sectors were to extend these figures, a more collaborative approach to industry growth was required. One of the responses has been the www.energystream.co.nz website, developed by Venture Taranaki in partnership with New Zealand Trade and Enterprise. The heart of EnergyStream is a comprehensive database of the extensive capabilities of the New Zealand industry. This publication – the New Zealand Oil and Gas Industry Capabilities Directory – is an overview of those capabilities. New Zealand is one of the world’s most attractive investment locations for oil and gas exploration. With a supportive government - at both regional and central levels – progressive permitting structure, an established and innovative industry, boundless exploration potential, talented people and an unbeatable lifestyle, New Zealand is well and truly open for business.
Right behind the industry, but at times overshadowed, is an exceptionally talented multi-disciplined supply chain. This document is a celebration of the innovative companies and the immense capabilities resident within that sector. While this sector, and indeed the industry itself, is primarily centred on the Taranaki region, an emerging hub and spoke network is enabling that expertise and experience to ensure best practice and lessons learnt in Taranaki are supporting new exploration regions throughout New Zealand. There is also increased scope to extend that flow of ideas and services internationally. New Zealand has multiple sedimentary basins. Known or potential hydrocarbons are located both onshore and offshore either under the extensive continental shelf or within many of the deepwater basins in the Exclusive Economic Zone. The Taranaki Basin is currently the only producing basin in New Zealand, yet it remains comparatively unexplored, particularly in deep water locations. There is therefore considerable potential for further discoveries. The rest of New Zealand also offers many exploration opportunities. The Great South Basin, Canterbury, Reinga/ Northland, Raukumara and East Coast basins are currently emerging areas of petroleum potential. As early as 1865 settlers observed that the oily scum on Ngamotu beach, New Plymouth, Taranaki, required them to wipe their boots and lift their dresses when they walked along the sand. Oil was literally flowing off the beach. The Alpha well in Taranaki (1865) is considered to be the first oil well in the Commonwealth and one of the first in the world. However it was the discoveries of Kapuni (1959) and Maui (1969) and the involvement of companies such as Shell, BP and Todd that propelled the nation into the modern era of petroleum. Kapuni, located onshore, is the oldest producing gas and condensate field in New Zealand. When the field went into production in 1969, it launched a new era for New Zealand’s energy supply through the national supply of gas. The development of infrastructure for Kapuni paved the way for future oil and gas discoveries such as Maui. In recent years, other significant gas and oil fields have come on-stream. These include Mangahewa (1998), Pohokura (2006), Tui (2007), Cheal (2008), Maari (2009) , Kupe (2010) and Sidewinder (2011). Proactive marketing of oil and gas opportunities by the Government and an attractive fiscal regime has seen the arrival of major international petroleum companies looking at further exploration. The oil and gas industry in New Zealand today is extremely active. There is an established infrastructure, including gas production and storage facilities, specialist port facilities and pipelines that transport gas throughout the North Island. Working alongside international organisations, Taranaki companies have evolved skills, relationships and knowledge about the industry and are highly capable, multi-disciplined players servicing national and global needs.
One of the oldest oil fields in the world is still producing oil. The RMP-4 well, located at Moturoa, New Plymouth, produces three barrels a day, using a modern version of a beam pump.
