PLAYERS TO WATCH
TEAM NOTES
Preseason OVC Offensive Player of the Year...The
South Carolina transfer threw for 2,680 yards and 24
touchdowns during the 2008 season on his way to
OVC Offensive Player of the Year honors...His 2,680
yards is the second most passing yards in a single
season and his 24 TD passes
tied a career record for
most in a single season...Thompson’s 2,680 passing
yards were also the most in a single-season for UT
Martin since 1995...Thompson has completed 59.8%
of his career pass attempts (271-for-453), which is
tops in Skyhawk history, narrowly edging out Brady
Wahlberg (59.3% from 2002-05)...Thompson also
stands just eight touchdown passes shy of tying the
all-time mark (40 by Leonard Williams from 1990-91).
• UT Martin will renew its in-state rivalry with Memphis this season for the first time
since the 1932 season. The two teams will play Sept. 19 at the Liberty Bowl. UT Martin
(formerly known as Hall-Moody) won the initial two meetings (1924 and 1925) before
Memphis (formerly known as West Tennessee State Teachers College) won four
games between the years of 1928 and 1932.
• Memphis will be the lone Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) opponent for UT Martin this
season. In 2010 the Skyhawks will travel to Neyland Stadium in Knoxville, Tenn. to
match up with Southeastern Conference foe Tennessee for the first-time in program
history. The game is set for Sept. 4, 2010. Last season the team battled a pair of of FBS
foes including nationally-ranked South Florida and Auburn.
• Senior offensive lineman Joe Gibbs was named a second-team preseason All-
American by Consensus Draft Services (CDS). Gibbs, a 6-4, 280-pound tackle, was a
2008 All-OVC selection after grading out at 87 percent during the season and not
allowing a sack.
• Last season ended with UT Martin coming up just two points shy against Eastern
Kentucky, as a last second desperation
field goal attempt fell short, giving EKU the
OVC Championship and keeping the Skyhawks winless all-time against the Colo-
nels. Although the Skyhawks missed out on an at-large playoff berth, they did finish the
year 8-4 overall, 6-2 in the OVC (tied for second). UTM ranked 44th in the College
Sporting News final Gridiron Power Index (GPI).
• UT Martin ranked fourth nationally a season ago in scoring offense (37.33 points/
game). The team also ranked 16th nationally in total offense (405.58 yards/game).

2009 Preseason All-OVC...2008 All-OVC first-team
selection...The Ole Miss transfer caught 66 passes for
894 yards and 12 touchdowns during the 2008
season...Hicks’ 66 receptions tied Taurean Stephen’s
mark set in 2003, and was the fifth best total in a single-
season in UTM history...Hicks will enter the 2009
season needing 24 catches to move into the school’s
top 10 for career receptions...Hicks’ 894 receiving
yards are the second most in a single-season for a UT
Martin receiver since Dwayne McKinney had 829
yards in 1980.
