Q177. Is 18 an appropriate age to make a decision about the future
of a country, state, or city? Why or why not?
A. Sample Answer
I know this might come as a shock, but I do not believe that 18 is an appropriate age to make a
decision about the future of a country, state, or city. To start with, most 18-year olds are not even out
of high school yet. Therefore, they don’t really have the mentality to focus on anything but themselves
and their immediate world. As a high school student, they are more concerned about their school life,
and their social lives, rather than the affairs of their country, state, or city. Also, they will usually
follow what their parents’ beliefs are because they live under the same roof. However, after their
first year of college, I feel that they will be better prepared to make these difficult decisions that
affect our nation, states, and cities. When they have gone to college or university, they have met other
people from outside their little worlds. This causes them to have more of an open mind to others.
Therefore, they are more understanding of the larger world around them. Since 18 year olds do not
have the grasp on the larger world, I believe that 18 is too young of an age to make the decisions that
affect more than just their high school.
