Emergency response
Since 2014, more than 26,000 people have lost
their lives in the attempt to cross the Central
Mediterranean, and
the actual number of fatal-
ities recorded is likely to be much higher due to
unreported and “invisible” shipwrecks.
Despite this, there is currently no effective search
and rescue mechanism in place to prevent deaths
and save lives across the Mediterranean route.
The partnership between IFRC and SOS
Mediterranée, onboard the
Search and Rescue
ship Ocean Viking, fills an important gap by
providing essential humanitarian services such
as food, items for basic needs, and access to
protection and health
services to all survivors,
regardless of their migration status.
