The Flower Parade in Zundert, the
Netherlands, takes place in September.
It’s famous for its floats, which
are made of flowers. You can see
fantastic animals, people, buildings,
motorcycles, and even astronauts.
Who makes these works of art?
Every year, there is a float competition
at the parade. Twenty villages enter
the competition, and each village
makes one float. Most people in the
village help make their float. The
younger people build it out of wire,
papier-mâché, and cardboard, and the
older people grow thousands of flowers
for it. They all work on the float for
three months during the summer.
Then, three days before the parade,
everyone decorates the float with the
flowers.
It’s hard work, but the people from
the village enjoy working together.
They make friends and have fun,
and sometimes their float wins the
competition!

Answer the questions.
What’s inside fireworks?
2
What happens when someone lights
the fuse of a firework?
3
What makes the beautiful colors
in fireworks?
 4
Why do some fireworks make many
different colors?
5
When was the last time you saw
fireworks? What were they like?
Fireworks have gunpowder inside them, and
they also have a fuse. When someone lights
the fuse of a firework, gas from the gunpowder
pushes the firework up into the air. When the
firework is in the air, the gunpowder explodes
and usually makes a loud sound.
Fireworks have metal salts inside them, too.
The metal salts explode with the gunpowder.
Different types of metal salts make different
colors when they burn. Lithium makes a red
light, copper makes a green light, and sodium
makes a yellow light. Some fireworks have
many different metal salts, so they make lots of
different colors when the gunpowder explodes.
