Absorbing (adj) 
- something that is absorbing is very interesting and keeps your 
attention.
Example: I read her last novel and found it very absorbing.
To excel (v)

To encounter (v) 
- to meet someone unexpectedly, or to experience, esp. something 
unpleasant.
Example: In the kitchen I encountered a woman I had never seen before.

To embody (v) 
- to represent a quality or an idea exactly; to include as part of 
something.
Example: She embodied good sportsmanship on the playing field.

religion.
Dire (adj) 
- very serious or extreme.
Example: These people are in dire need of help.
Example: He gave a dire warning that an earthquake was imminent.
Sheer (adj) 
- used to emphasize how very great, important, or powerful a quality or 
feeling is.
Example: The suggestion is sheer nonsense.
Example: His success was due to sheer willpower/determination.
Complacency (n) 
- a feeling of calm satisfaction with your own abilities or situation 
that prevents you from trying harder.
Example: These are the top-ten gadget gifts under $50 for the technophile.
