Mesophyll, or "middle leaf," refers to the layers of cells that lie beneath the epidermis of dicot 
leaves. Most leaves have two types of parenchyma cell arrangements in their mesophyll: palisade 
parenchyma and spongy parenchyma. The column-shaped, densely packed cells of the palisade 
parenchyma, also known as the palisade mesophyll, can be found in one, two, or three layers. 
Unevenly shaped cells are loosely arranged below the palisade parenchyma. These are the spongy 
parenchyma's cells (or spongy mesophyll). Through the stomata, the air space between the spongy 
parenchyma cells permits gaseous exchange between the leaf and the surrounding atmosphere. The 
intercellular spaces in the spongy parenchyma of aquatic plants enable the leaf to float. The mesophyll

: Leaf Adaptations 
Coniferous plant species that do well in cold climates, such as spruce, fir, and pine, have 
smaller leaves that resemble needles. Sunken stomata and a smaller surface area of these needle-like 
leaves both contribute to a reduction in water loss. Plants that grow in hot climates, like cacti, have 
leaves that have turned into spines, which, along with their succulent stems, aid in water conservation. 
A thick waxy cuticle on the surface of the leaf and wide lamina allow many aquatic plants to have 
leaves that can float on the water's surface and repel water.
