Abstract:
Evaluating Turkish history poses significant challenges due to the
deep historical timeline that stretches back thousands of years before the acceptance
of Islam and the expansive geographical scope of the region inhabited by the Turks.
The extensive duration and broad geographic area of pre-Islamic Turkish history give
rise to various complexities. Pre-Islamic Turkish historiography can be built upon
five fundamental problems stemming from the structure of Turkish history: temporal
unity, spatial unity, political unity, the notion of ancientness and rootedness in the
concept of state, and the adequacy or inadequacy of sources. These fundamental
issues not only make the writing and interpretation of pre-Islamic Turkish history,
culture, and socio-economic life challenging but also present historians with diverse
dilemmas. Pre-Islamic Turkish history is characterized by a wide temporal span, a
geographically scattered landscape, numerous short-lived states due to an ephemeral
perception of politics and dominion, as well as a scarcity of reliable local sources and
an abundance of diverse foreign sources. Additionally, besides the problems arising
from the structure of Turkish history, there are other factors such as socio-cultural
changes throughout the historical process and contemporary conditions, including
the concept of the age system, which contribute to the
complexity of the subject
