He opened the door.
I broke a cup.
Someone rang the bell.

Intransitive
The coach stopped.
The door opened.
The cup broke.
The bell rang.

The two sentences can describe the same event. The transitive sentence has as its subject the agent, the person who made the event happen (the driver). The intransitive sentence describes the event but does not mention the agent. Here are some common verbs that can be transitive or intransitive.
Alter, develop, increase, shine, tear, begin, divide, join, shut, turn, bend, drive, melt, slide, weaken, boil, dry, mix, smash, unite, break, end, move, soften, burn, finish, open, sound, change, fly, pour, spread, close, freeze, ring, stand, cook, hang, roll, start, combine, harden, sail, stop, continue, hurt, separate, strengthen, crash, improve, shake, swing.

NOTE
Raise is transitive, and rise is intransitive.


The oil companies will raise their prices.
The price of oil will rise.

9 Linking verbs

A link verb is the verb which doesn’t show an action and used with noun or adjective.


To be, look, seem, smell, taste, appear (=to seem true), stay, go (=become), grow, turn (=become), get, come, keep, remain, sound etc.
To describe change we use become, come, get, go, grow and turn (into).
The marks on the floor become invisible.
We can’t use become in imperatives and in some phrases. But to describe the change in a job it is used.
Get lost!
Be faster!
Get ready!
Get broken, get dressed, get killed etc
Mr. Shipman became the president of the company.
For stating color changes, we use go and turn.
The traffic light went/turned green and I pushed the gas.
We use go with undesirable state such as: blind, bald, deaf etc.
After his father’s die everything went bad/wrong.
Children went crazy when they took too many minuses.
When something changes another thing we use turn into.
All of my students want that minuses will turn into plus.
Turn is used for change in an age.
When she turned 25 she got Master’s Degree.
Come, get and grow can be used for gradual changes.
It is getting dark. Finish the work faster!
Also, come and grow can appear with full infinitive.
I finally come to appreciate my life.
